End of season awards.

With the topsy-turvy 2012 season behind us, I’d like to take a minute to reflect on the season.

It was tough season for everyone, batsmen and bowlers alike, though at some point everyone had a part to play, be it a good innings, a good spell of overs, a well taken catch or even a good piece of fielding. Missing games left, right and centre is tough and doesn’t give anyone the chance to get in any sort of nick, bat or ball, and it wasn’t a surprise that the first 4 games we played, we won and then when the weather hit, games were missed and we suffered with consistency as a result.

I’d like to thank Jude and Georgie Finlay, Mandy Payne (and Pops) and Lisa Sillence for making the teas, a  cracking job you did, long may it continue!

A big thank you to Chris ‘Statto’ Barber for always doing the book on match days and for the arduous task of filling out the play cricket web site. It’s always good fun to see how bad we really are!

Thank you to everyone who umpired (those who didn’t, it has been noted!) It’s a thankless task.

And so to the awards…….

All votes have been counted and verified and I can now reveal the results.

Fielder of the year

A couple of people in the running here but in the end, one man stood out above the rest, always ready, very few chances are ever put down and rarely does anything get past him. Some unbelievable catches were taken in the slips by him and all from a 59-year-old!! For the 2nd year running,

Congratulations: Denis ‘Pops’ Payne

Bowler of the year

Again, a close running category, this was won by a man who always bowls with a level of control often unmatched, always making things happen, and is extremely modest to boot. His season ended with top quality figures. Another elder statesman!!

Congratulations: Kev ‘Kevlar’ Finlay

Batsman of the year

Yet again this came down to the wire and has gone to a consistent player, someone who doesn’t suffer with nerves and says what will be will be. He opens the batting and more often than not, gets us off to a good start and is one half of the clubs highest partnership and hit his top score this past season. Again, an elder statesman!!

Congratulations: Dave ‘Soldier Boy’ McAdam

Player of the year

So to the last award, this guy won  by a clear margin and is in my opinion a worthy winner. New to the club, he is as cool as ice. A classy, technically gifted batsman and a useful bowler, he made runs this season, with some big scores and took wickets when he bowled. Good in the field and helpful with his ideas, he is always ready to do what is asked of him. Never wanting to steal anyone’s lime light, he has no option in this case, but to accept our pats on the back and listen to our requests that he only gets better, a big well done on his debut season. One for the younger lads here!

Congratulations: Cameron ‘Iceman’ Messenger.

I will dish the trophies out at the AGM (providing I can prise the Players Award from Sam!) I will be arranging a Christmas drink down the Cleveland, so keep your phones on.

Cheers guys, here’s to next season.

From the Most Awesome Captain to have ever lived.
